The P-8 Poseidon is based on Boeings commercial B-737.800 aircraft.

The numbers reported in the aircraft ordered column are based on the US DoD contract awards. See further comments below.

The orders and delivery numbers for the USA included the SD&D (six) aircraft.

South Korea:

Selected the P-8A to replace its P-3 Orion fleet. The number of Poseidons to be ordered is unknown.

Lot 1 - 4: equal to LRIP batches 1 to 4.
Lot 5 - 8: equal to FRP batched 1 to 3.
Lot 9: Long lead funding contract awarded on March 30, 2017 for 10 aircraft divided into seven for the US Navy and three for the Royal Air Force.


Ordered 12 aircraft with an option for another four P-8As. Converted its option into an order. In its last strategic white paper it commited for a total of 15 Poseidons.

India placed two orders for its P-8I purchase. The first in January 2009 covered eight aircraft. A follow on order was placed in July 2016 for another four aircraft. Orders were placed directly through commercial sales and not the foreign military sales routing. The first Indian Navy P-8A was delivered on May 15th, 2013 and completed in 2015. The next four Poseidons will be delivered in 2020.

New Zealand:

Requested the potential sale through FMS for up to four P-8As which has been approved by the State Department (DSCA) on April 27th by notifying US Congress.

29-03-17 Ministry of Defence announced it signed a contract to
  purchase five P-8As for the Royal Norwegian Air Force.

The P-8As will replace six Lockheed Martin P-3 Orion and three Dassault Falcon 20 aircraft. Aircraft deliveries will take place in 2022 and 2023. Until then the Orions will remain in service with the Royal Norwegian Air Force.

United Kingdom:

Its first P-8A Poseidon Martimime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) is expected to arrive in 2020.

  form in April 2018 and 201 squadron in 2021. Both will
  be based at RAF Lossiemouth in Moray.  
30-03-17 The US DoD awarded a contract covering the production
  of the first two P-8As (Lot 8) and long lead funding for
  three aircraft (Lot 9).  
11-07-16 The MoD confirmed the deal to buy nine P-8As.  
23-11-15 In the National Security Strategy and Strategic Defence
  and Security Review the intended buy of the P-8A
  Poseidon was announced.  

United States:

The US Navy plans to order 117 Poseidon aircraft. The last order was placed on March 30th, 2017.

NAS Jacksonville, CPRW-11, was the first wing to transition from the P-3C Orion to the P-8A Poseidon. VP-16 was the first operational P-8A squadron followed by: VP-5, VP-45, VP-8, VP-10 and VP-26.

NAS Whidbey Island. CPRW-10, started its conversion to the P-8A in October 2016. The first squadron to transition on the west coast was VP-4 (seventh squadron). VP-47 is currently transitioning from the P-3C Orion.
Squadrons operational on the P-3C and to convert to the P-8A are: VP-1, VP-9, VP-40, VP-46 and VP-69.
