 F-35A

The Belgian government announced it selected the Lockheed Martin F-35A to replace its current F-16s on October 25, 2018. 34 Lightning IIs will be bought with deliveries starting in 2025. Florennes will receive the first F-35s followed by Kleine-Brogel from 2027. Both air bases will undergo major infrastructure works.

Of the other contenders for the F-16 replacement only the Eurofighter consortium submitted an official bid. Dassault offered the Rafale but not through the official process. Both Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet and Saab JAS-39E Gripen didn't submit a proposal.

A321 / A330

The A321 is leased and used for transport, it replaced the A330 which was also leased.

 KC-30 (A330MRTT)

The KC-30s will be owned NATO and operated in a pooling arrangement with each member nations allocated its requested flight hours. As NATO is an organization its aircraft are registered in a member nation with the KC-30s receiving a Royal Netherlands Air Force serial and roundel. A400M
Royal Air Force A400M (Atlas C.1)

The Airbus D&S A400M will replace the C-130H in service. One aircraft is ordered together with Luxembourg. The first two aircraft (Luxembourg followed by Belgium) should be delivered in 2020. Current planning is to base them at Melsbroek air base however the base needs an upgrade of its current infrastructure (hangars, ramp etc) to operate the A400M.

The first Hercules was retired on December 8, 2017. CH-08 arrived at Beauvechain (Bevekom) air base for storage.

ERJ-135/145

The current fleet of four aircraft will be withdrawn from service with the transportation of VIPs outsourced.

Alpha Jet 
 
Alpha Jet on display at BAF days. 

The Alpha Jets are based in France were they are used for pilot training together with the French Air Force. Maintenance was performed at Beauvechain air base which completed the last overhaul of an Alpha Jet. On July 21, 2018 - Belgians national day - the aircraft made their last fly-past over Brussels. All will be withdrawn from use.

MO-9
USAF MQ-9

Four MQ-9B will be purchased and based at Florennes. The first will be delivered in 2023.
